Meeting of Dimitri Khundadze with WHO Consultant on Price Regulation and Reimbursement of Medicines

Media and Society 16 Nov 2021
Meeting of Dimitri Khundadze with WHO Consultant on Price Regulation and Reimbursement of Medicines

Dimitri Khundadze, Chairman of the Healthcare and Social Issues Committee, met with Luka Voncina, WHO Consultant on Price Regulation and Reimbursement of Medicines.

The main topic of the meeting was the issue of increasing the availability of medicines in the country.

"The most pressing issue now, particularly for the elderly, is the exorbitant cost of medicines. The Georgian market is unusual in that prices in the country surge, frequently exceeding the overall European index. When the cost of generic drugs exceeds the cost of brand-name medicines, the population's costs rise insufficiently. There are several instances where there is an excess of pricey drugs due to the commercial interests of pharmaceutical corporations and doctors. Despite increased financial allocation for Georgia's healthcare system, this issue continues to be a problem for the low-income population. The Committee has been working on these issues for more than a year, and I believe the time has come for the true result to be in the form of effective, high-quality, and affordable pharmaceuticals in the country”, - Dimitri Khundadze commented after the meeting.
