Mariam Lashkhi and Rati Ionatamishvili met with the UNICEF representative

Mariam Lashkhi, Chair of the Interim Commission on Women and Children, and Rati Ionatamishvili, Chair of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, met with the UNICEF representative to Georgia, Jesper Moller.
The meeting was dedicated to the protection of the rights of children and minors.
According to M. Lashkhi, the discourse addressed one of the priorities of the Commission - protection of children in cyberspace.
The parties reviewed cooperation prospects.
“At the meeting, we discussed the issue of breastfeeding, for which UNICEF has developed an appropriate protocol — for example, how we should act and what standards we must follow during the monitoring of primary healthcare reform. We also agreed to continue our joint work to protect children's rights”, - stated Mariam Lashkhi.
As Rati Ionatamishvili, Chair of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, noted, the meeting focused on the draft law “On the Rehabilitation and Support of Juveniles in Conflict with the Law,” which has already been adopted by Parliament for the I reading.
According to him, it was emphasized during the meeting that issues related to juvenile delinquency pose challenges not only for Georgia but for other countries as well. As Rati Ionatamishvili mentioned, it is essential to develop an approach based on the protection of human rights, as well as mechanisms of rehabilitation and support.
“It is important that children who are currently in conflict with the law, upon reaching adulthood, have motivation toward education, a healthy lifestyle, and sports activities, and that a tendency toward criminal behavior does not develop”, - stated Ionatamishvili.
The UNICEF representative positively assessed the cooperation with members of Parliament and expressed readiness for continued collaboration in the future.
