The Deputy Interior Minister, Alexander Darakhvelidze, introduced the Draft Law on Weapons to the Sports Committee for the I reading with the accompanying legal package. The reporter informed Members of Parliament that the acquisition, carrying and use of electric shock devices, gas aerosol (commonly known as pepper spray) and sound (acoustic) weapons will now be subject to stringent regulations.
According to him, the applicable regulations provide vague records on the three aforementioned weapons; hence, in order to address the said gap, the Ministry, based on the experience of the European countries, has developed the legal package, according to which, electric shock devices shall be removed from sale and only the administrative bodies shall be eligible for their use. As for the gas aerosol and acoustic weapons, natural persons and legal entities, upon the preliminary approval of the police, shall acquire the right to buy the aforementioned weapons on the basis of a certain justification.
According to Victor Sanikidze, Chair of the Committee, the Draft aims at ensuring safety requirements, and thus, the Committee approves the amendments.
