Tengiz Sharmanashvili: Certainly, human rights must be protected

"Certainly, human rights must be protected; we won't infringe upon anyone's rights. However, we cannot permit minors to be influenced by this ideology. That's why such propaganda will be restricted, and associated events and medical interventions will be prohibited in Georgia", - Tengiz Sharmanashvili, a member of the parliamentary majority, stated in Rustavi, at the meeting of the Steering Commission of the Universal-Public Review of Constitutional Amendments with the people.

Tengiz Sharmanashvili spoke about the dangers that the presented legislative change is supposed to prevent.

"Let's consider the drama of how the world is evolving and what we need to safeguard ourselves from. When the country was formulating its constitution in 1995, it stated that the family is the union of spouses. At that time, no one questioned it, no one envisioned that a spouse could be anyone other than a woman and a man. We weren't obstructed, nor did anyone perceive this threat, not even religious leaders, not even us. It appeared to be such a commonplace occurrence, but then the world progressed in such a manner that at times, the mind struggles to keep pace with these developments”, - Tengiz Sharmanashvili elucidated.

According to him, in 2017, it was necessary to write the "unity of man and woman" in the constitution for the definition of family.

"That wasn't deemed sufficient either. In our draft, you'll notice that we've introduced the terms "genetic woman" and "genetic man”. Because it's come to light that it's a matter of biology, and if we only use "woman" and "man," someone might argue that it's a matter of choice. We need to add and clarify something that we couldn't have even contemplated 3-4 years ago. This pseudo-liberal ideology is gaining traction globally, which poses a significant threat", - Tengiz Sharmanashvili said.

He also spoke about the protection of minors.

"For instance, in certain countries, they teach in kindergarten that you're a child, and when you grow up, you'll decide whether you're a boy or a girl. This is the message conveyed to 4-5-year-old children, and this is the direction the world is heading”, - Tengiz Sharmanashvili added.
