Nikoloz Samkharadze met with his Slovak counterpart in Bratislava

Media and Society 25 Sep 2025
Nikoloz Samkharadze met with his Slovak counterpart in Bratislava
Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, leading the delegation of the Committee, visits Bratislava at the invitation of the Parliament of Slovakia.

The delegation members met with the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Slovakian Parliament, Marián Kéry, and the members of the Committee.

The discourse addressed the prospects of bilateral relations. As the parties emphasised, Georgia and Slovakia enjoy good political relations. The necessity to intensify cooperation in the trade-economic sphere was a key focus.

Georgian MPs reviewed the capacities to get the advantage of the culture and tourism potential and stressed the significance of the appointment of direct flights.

One of the meeting’s focal points was the EU integration of Georgia. Mr. Samkharadze reviewed the factors that led to the suspension of membership negotiations. He informed his Slovak colleagues of the European institutions’ attempts to discredit the parliamentary elections of 2024 and the reforms undertaken by the Georgian authorities to prepare for EU membership by 2030.

Slovak Members of Parliament have expressed their disagreement with the policy of the EU institutions towards Georgia. They have emphasised that Georgia is a key partner to the EU and its membership should remain a priority on the agenda, and that Slovakia strongly supports Georgia’s EU membership.

Georgian Members of Parliament provided the accounts of the grave situation in the occupied regions and the complex process of the Russia-Georgia conflict resolution. The parties also addressed the domestic political environment. Slovakian politicians emphasised that the domestic political attitudes and issues, as well as the facts of foreign interference, are remarkably similar in both countries.

The discourse included a deliberation on the regional security environment and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the neighbourhood. Slovak MPs shared their approach to the conflict, unequivocally condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine, stressing that they would never tolerate the annexation of Ukrainian territories. They also supported the end of the war and a peaceful resolution of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The Georgian delegation members expressed their gratitude to their Slovak colleagues for financing projects across various regions of Georgia, which facilitate the well-being and prosperity of the local population.

Nikoloz Samkharadze invited his Slovak counterpart and the Committee members to Georgia.

The Parliamentary Delegation, headed by Nikoloz Samkharadze, is composed of the Foreign Relations Committee members: Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the EU Integration Committee, and Irakli Kadagishvili, Chair of the Regional Policy and Self-Government Committee.
