Parliament Approves Legislative Amendments Concerning Social and Legal Protection Guarantees for Police Officers and Firefighter-Rescuers

Plenary 17 Dec 2025
Parliament Approves Legislative Amendments Concerning Social and Legal Protection Guarantees for Police Officers and Firefighter-Rescuers

During a plenary session, the Parliament of Georgia approved, at third reading, amendments to the Law of Georgia on Police, together with an accompanying draft law. The amendments concern social and legal protection guarantees for police officers and firefighter-rescuers.

According to the amendments, in the event of a police officer’s death while performing official duties, the officer’s family will be granted a one-time financial allowance of 30,000 GEL, while funeral expenses will be reimbursed in the amount of 2,000 GEL.

The draft law also determines the amount of one-time financial assistance payable to a police officer in the event of injury sustained while performing official duties. In particular: in cases of severe bodily injury, the allowance will amount to 20,000 GEL; in cases of moderate bodily injury, 15,000 GEL; in cases of minor bodily injury, 10,000 GEL.

The duration of health-related leave will be determined based on the severity of bodily injury or the nature of the illness and shall not exceed one year. Extension of this period will be permissible, based on the conclusion of a relevant medical commission established within the Ministry, in accordance with the procedure and duration determined by the Minister of Internal Affairs. In addition, an employee of the Ministry’s system may be granted paid health-related leave for a period of up to four months.

Amendments were also introduced to the Law on Civil Safety, extending social protection guarantees to firefighter-rescuers.

As stated by the reporter, Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze, the amendments will enter into force on 1 February 2026.
