Nikoloz Samkjaradze met with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Brazil

Friendship Groups 22 Aug 2025
Nikoloz Samkjaradze met with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Brazil

Within the framework of the official visit to Brazil, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee and the Delegation members met with the Secretary General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Brazil - the Deputy Minister, Mme. Maria Laura da Rocha.

The meeting convened to discuss Georgia-Brazil relations and explore potential cooperation opportunities. Georgian and Brazilian counterparts reviewed the free trade prospects between Georgia and the Mercosur Union. The discussion encompassed security concerns in Latin America and the South Caucasus.

Georgian Members of Parliament provided the Brazilian partners with an update on the occupied territories of Georgia and the primary directions of the peacekeeping policy implemented by the Georgian authorities.

The Georgian Delegation thanked the Brazilian Government for supporting the territorial integrity of Georgia in various international organisations.

Nikoloz Samkharadze proposed to provide assistance in implementing the non-recognition policy of the occupied territories in Latin America. According to him, Georgia needs political support also in terms of the annulment of the recognition of its occupied territories by Venezuela and Nicaragua and the involvement of Brazil in this process for ensuring the implementation of International law is paramount.

Georgian MPs also visited the Diplomatic Academy of Brazil - the Rio Branco Institute and met with its Director General, Mitzi Gurgel Valente da Costa, who represented the key directions and the academic specifications of the Academy. The advantages of attending the lectures at the Rio Branco Institute for the Georgian diplomats were considered.

Mitzi Gurgel Valente da Costa expressed his commitment to accepting the Georgian diplomats at his Institute.

As Nikoloz Samkharadze observed, the Rio Branco Academy stands as one of the most prominent and venerable institutions in Latin America. Consequently, it offers young Georgian diplomats a multitude of advantageous opportunities for fostering cooperation, thereby enhancing their recognition and understanding of the region.

The Parliamentary Delegation, headed by the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Nikoloz Samkharadze, is composed of: Mariam Lashkhi, Head of the Georgia-Brazil Friendship Group and the Chair of the Education, Science and Youth Affairs Committee; and Victor Sanikidze, the Chair of the Sports Committee; as well as the Ambassador of Georgia to Brazil, H.E. Zurab Mchedlishvili.
