Paata Kvizhinadze: the EU candidate status, first of all, is merited by the Government and it shall not be disputed

“The EU candidate status, first of all, is merited by the Government and it shall not be disputed. No matter how loud the accusations are or attribute it to the merit of people, naturally it is, but is it merited by people 2 years ago, 10 or 15 years ago?”, - the Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, Paata Kvizhinadze stated at the plenary session after the report of the Finance Minister within the Ministerial Hour.

He gave a positive assessment to the activity of the Ministry and emphasized the key issues included in the agenda of the Ministry.

As evidence of the efficiency of the Government, he named PEFA methods, where Georgia takes the highest place among 59 countries.

P. Kvizhinadze overviewed the past years and the problems that Georgia encountered due to the pandemic and the geopolitical shocks, however, the proper and consistent fiscal policy of the country led to positive outcomes in all sectors.

“The economic index in 2020 was reduced by 6,8%, the deficit constituted 9% (the margin established under the legislation is 3%) and the correlation of the state debt to GDP exceeded the established 60%, and in 2023, the modified budget deficit was at 2,5% and the state debt at 39%”, - he stated.

As he noted, the further development of the country requires a continuation of the reforms in the fiscal and macroeconomic directions.
